At the end of September, we made a trip to Michigan to visit a few farms and take in the 2002 Michigan International Alpaca Fest.

Michagan Alpaca Fest

Our first stop was Pebble Brook Farm Alpacas with Phil and Judy Maybee as our hosts. Phil and Judy not only had a wonderful farm with beautiful animals, they were both very involved with the Michigan International Alpaca Fest with Phil being the chairman and Judy the Special Events Co-ordinator.

Next, we met Barrie Lynn Wood of Benchmark Alpacas. Barrie Lynn was in the midst of completing a new barn structure for the Alpacas, but took time to show us around and introduce us to her curious and beautiful Alpacas.

Then, down the highway to Luka’s Alpaca Ranch with Lew and Kathryn Kukla as our hosts. Lew and Kathryn had a very nice farm and very laid back Alpacas. Aside from the normal inquisitive nature of the animals, they were so comfortable with new people, we had to move around them in the barn!

After a good nights rest, we went up the road to Aurora Alpacas and met Ron and Sharon Winsauer. Ron and Sharon were busy packing up for the Alpaca show, but took the time to introduce their Alpacas. Susan fell in love with Tonka, a petit Suri. Sharon is also involved with the fleece from all aspects; judging, preparing and finishing.

Saturday was the first day of the show. It was held at Michigan State University. The barn was packed with farms from several states, displays of Alpaca products and lots of beautiful Alpacas. In the morning, we had the opportunity to take in a couple of seminars held as part of the show. We gained insights into farm layout as well as having the opportunity to hear David Pugh discuss Alpaca health. After a day of watching the Alpacas and their owners vie for ribbons and talking with lots of people, we attended the Breeders Dinner and again listened to David Pugh entertain everyone with stories of Alpacas and life in general.
Sunday, we watched a few more class showings, observed our first agility competition and made our good byes with everyone who made our visit a huge success and a memorable one.

Our trip confirmed a few things for us;
We made a good choice to get involved with Alpacas, they are wonderful animals and a good investment.
People who own Alpacas are some of the nicest people you will meet
There is always something to be gained from meeting and talking Alpacas with good people.

We would really like to thank Phil & Judy, Barrie Lynn, Lew & Kathryn and Ron & Sharon for taking the time to meet us and share their experiences with us. We valued all of your time, energy and insights.
